ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup water (room temperature)
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (plus more for cooking)
- 1 teaspoon salt
steps
- 1.
In a skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook until soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning. Remove from heat and set aside.
- 2.
In a mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Gradually add the water, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- 3.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
- 4.
Divide the dough into 4 equal portions and roll each into a flat circle about 1/4 inch thick.
- 5.
Spread the caramelized onions evenly over half of each circle, then fold over to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges to seal.
- 6.
Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a little oil. Cook each flatbread for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through.
- 7.
Serve warm, either plain or with your favorite dipping sauces or spreads.
