Spicy Tomato Basil Pasta

- 1 lb spaghetti
- 1½ lbs ripe tomatoes, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped

- 1 tsp sugar
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
