ingredients
- 4 slices of Italian bread
- 4-6 oz Gruyère cheese, thinly sliced
- 1 black truffle, shaved
- 2 tbsp butter, softened
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
- Salt and pepper to taste
steps
- 1.
In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tbsp of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes.
- 2.
Stir in the brown sugar and balsamic vinegar, cooking for an additional 2 minutes until the onions are coated and caramelized. Remove from heat.
- 3.
Preheat a panini press or a griddle pan.
- 4.
Spread the remaining softened butter on one side of each bread slice.
- 5.
On the unbuttered side of two slices of bread, layer the sliced cheese, followed by the shaved black truffle. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
- 6.
Divide the caramelized onions evenly on top of the cheese and truffle.
- 7.
Place the remaining bread slices on top, buttered side facing out.
- 8.
Grill the sandwiches in a panini press or on a griddle pan until the bread is golden and crispy, and the cheese is melted, about 4-5 minutes per side.
- 9.
Remove from heat, slice each sandwich in half, and serve hot.
