ingredients
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- ¼ cup ice water
- 6 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for topping)
- Vanilla ice cream (optional, for serving)
steps
- 1.
In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- 2.
Slowly add ice water and mix until the dough comes together. Divide into two equal portions, flatten each into a disk, wrap with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- 3.
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out one dough disk on a lightly floured surface, then gently transfer it to a 9-inch pie dish. Trim the excess dough from the edges.
- 4.
In a separate bowl, combine sliced apples, sugar, and flour. Toss until the apples are evenly coated. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust.
- 5.
Roll out the second dough disk and cut it into decorative strips or shapes. Arrange the dough strips in a lattice pattern on top of the filling, pressing the edges into the bottom crust to seal.
- 6.
Brush the top crust with the beaten egg and sprinkle with granulated sugar.
- 7.
Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips, then bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
- 8.
Allow the pie to cool for at least 2 hours to allow the filling to set. Serve warm or at room temperature. Optionally, top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
