ingredients
- 2 large granny smith apples, peeled and diced
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon butter, melted
- 1 package of pre-made pie dough (2 crusts)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Powdered sugar for dusting
steps
- 1.
In a bowl, combine diced apples, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, lemon juice, and melted butter. Mix well and set aside for 15 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
- 2.
Roll out the pie dough on a lightly floured surface and cut into 4 circles, about 6 inches in diameter.
- 3.
Spoon a generous amount of the apple filling onto one half of each circle, leaving a border.
- 4.
Fold the other half of the dough over the filling, forming a half-moon shape, and crimp the edges with a fork to seal.
- 5.
Brush the tops of the pies with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
- 6.
In a deep pan or fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
- 7.
Carefully lower the pies into the hot oil, two at a time, and fry for about 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown, turning halfway through.
- 8.
Remove and drain on paper towels. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
